When it comes to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin (what we call the true RO), the current reference model is the 16202, which itself replaces the 15202. Next to this reference number is a pair of letters indicating the material selected for each edition. ST stands for steel, BA stands for gold, BC stands for platinum… and we’ve seen more in the past. Take 15202IP, for example, which combines titanium and platinum. Today, AP launches the Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202XT. And, with one very specific exception, this combination of letters has never been seen in the standard set.
XT… To RO Jumbo, these letters may not be familiar at all. Beyond that, if we go back in time, in 2021 to be precise, Audemars Piguet did launch a high quality cheap watches with such a reference, the shape of the 15202XT. What makes this watch special is its combination of uniqueness and materials, as it is a one-of-a-kind piece at the Only Watch charity auction. The case is indeed made of titanium and BMG. More on this later. This combination of materials remains unique to this model so far.
The 2023 collection follows the attractive RO Jumbo in white gold with a Tuscan blue dial, followed by a lightweight, innovative and eye-catching version – the new 16202XT. The real talking point in this version isn’t the actual grade 5 titanium case, with its classic brushed and polished finishes (which is nothing new to RO), but the additional materials used for the fully polished bezel and middle frame . The material, known as BMG or bulk metallic glass, is a palladium-based alloy used in microelectronics that “has many of the same properties as other glasses, including amorphousness and high strength, making it highly ‘s abrasion and corrosion resistance. Its amorphous nature creates a unique light effect when finished by hand,” explains the brand. The case is otherwise identical, measuring 39mm in diameter and 8.1mm thick. Another striking feature of this Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202XT is its dial. Like the Platinum 16202PT with its graduated sunburst brushed green dial, this new titanium x BMG version features a burgundy smoked dial with no pattern except for the beautiful sunray brushed texture. There’s no plaid here, just a smoky effect. The date dial matches the dial, and the appliqué hour markers and hands are in rose gold, adding an extra touch of luxury.
Underneath the sapphire caseback is the caliber 7121, a major update of the 16202 generation. Now manufactured in-house, this slim automatic movement runs at a modern 4 Hz frequency and stores a 52-hour power reserve. It’s done in a traditional way, but built in a modern way.
