Hausa People & Culture.
Hausas are of a population of over 30million people. They have the largest ethnic group in West Africa, have a similar believes but diverse in culture.
Hausas are majorly found in the northern part of Nigeria. They can also be found in the eastern part of Niger Republic, Cameroon, Chad, Togo and Sudan.
The Hausa people are an independent entity of people found around river Niger and Lake Chad. They are known for fishing, hunting and farming. The Hausas have battled with external domination due to lack of governing body. They were independent people before they were dominated by Usman Dan Fodio, and British colonist.
Regardless of the British colonization, Hausas culture has been able to stand beyond time and still relevant till date. 90% of the Hausa population are Muslims, a religion brought to them by traders of Northern Africans. Their culture is influence by their religion but the pioneer culture of the Hausa people still reflect in their day to day lives.
When a man is interested in a women of his choice, he sends a message of formal introduction to the bride’s family which the Hausas called ‘Gaisuwa’. The Hausa men are known for their famous ‘Babban Gida’ dress with their ‘Huluna’. The women are known with their ‘Abaya’ with scarfs or guinea material made into a scarf to match their beautiful wear.
